我要代填Transiting Through Kazakhstan: Do You Need an ETA?
Updated 2026-10-18
The border desk is the dividing line
Transit is decided by immigration control, not by the airport. Stay airside on a through ticket and you are not entering the country, so there is nothing to authorise. Pass through the border, even for a few hours, and you are entering — and the ETA rules apply if your citizenship requires them.
Airside connection
Through-checked bags and a single ticket are the signs of an airside connection. Follow the transit signage, keep your onward boarding pass, and do not exit. Confirm at check-in that your bags are checked through; if they are not, the connection may require you to clear immigration.
Changing airports or leaving for the city
Almaty and Astana each have one main international airport, so an airport change is usually a domestic hop rather than an international transit. Either way, leaving the international zone means clearing border control, which means you are a visitor entering Kazakhstan.
Long layovers are the classic trap: a nine-hour stop looks like a chance to see the city, and it is — but it also converts a transit into an entry.
How to be sure
Ask at check-in whether the connection is airside and whether the bags are through-checked. That single answer settles it. If the answer is anything else, treat it as an entry and check the portal for your citizenship.
