Updated 2026-10-18
Before you leave the aircraft
Keep your passport in your pocket, not in the overhead bin. Have your ETA result saved offline if you filed one — airport wifi is the last thing you want to depend on. Most arrivals are routine, but being ready keeps you out of the slow queue.
At the border desk
Join the foreign-passport queue unless signage says otherwise. The officer scans the passport, checks the record against it, and may ask your purpose and length of stay. Answer consistently with what you filed: mismatches are what turn a routine arrival into a secondary interview.
Almaty (ALA)
Almaty International is close to the city, roughly half an hour by road depending on traffic. Taxi desks and ride-hailing pickups are outside arrivals; agree the price or use the app before you get in. Currency exchange and SIM counters are in the arrivals area.
Astana (NQZ)
Nursultan Nazarbayev International is further from the centre, and winter weather can stretch the drive considerably. If you land late at night between November and March, arrange the transfer in advance rather than negotiating at the curb.
The first hour
Three things worth doing before you leave the terminal:
Before you leave the terminal
- Get some local currency — not every taxi or small shop takes cards
- Get a local SIM or confirm roaming data works
- Save your hotel address in Russian or Kazakh, in case you need to show a driver
